Millions of South Africans are once again relying on SASSA’s social grant payments to navigate the country’s rising cost of living. With food prices, transport fares, and basic household expenses continuing to climb, these monthly payouts remain a crucial safety net, supporting more than 18 million beneficiaries and helping families stay fed while keeping children in school.

In 2025, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) implemented major changes to its grant administration system to improve security and ensure that payments reach only eligible recipients. A key part of these reforms is a mandatory verification process requiring beneficiaries to confirm their identity and banking details. The rollout, which continues into early 2026, is designed to curb fraud, reduce payment errors, and strengthen accountability across the system.

From September 2025, SASSA also introduced compulsory biometric enrolment, including fingerprint verification, for new applicants and beneficiaries under review. This measure is aimed particularly at addressing fraud within the Old Age Grant category. As a result, beneficiaries are still expected to update their documents and fully comply with the new verification requirements to avoid delays or suspension of payments.

Below is a full breakdown of what beneficiaries need to know about SASSA grant payments for January 2026.

    SASSA January 2026 payment dates

    • Older Persons Grant: Tuesday, 6 January 2026
    • Disability Grant: Wednesday, 7 January 2026
    • Children’s Grants: Thursday, 8 January 2026

    SASSA grant amounts

    • Old Age Grant (60–74 years): R2,315
    • Old Age Grant (75 years and above): R2,335
    • Disability Grant: R2,315
    • War Veterans Grant: R2,315
    • Care Dependency Grant: R2,315
    • Child Support Grant: R560
    • Foster Care Grant: R1,250
    • SRD Grant: R370

How to check your SASSA grant status

After submitting an application, beneficiaries can track approval status and payment dates using official SASSA channels. It is important to use the same ID number and contact details used during registration.

    Online status check
Visit the official SASSA SRD website and enter your South African ID number and registered mobile number. Your status approved, pending, or declined will be displayed, along with payment dates if approved.

    Call or visit
Call SASSA’s toll-free line on 080 060 1011, or visit the nearest SASSA office for in-person assistance, including biometric-related queries.

    SMS
Send STATUS [space] ID number to 32555 using the same ID submitted during application.

    WhatsApp
Save SASSA’s WhatsApp number (082 046 8553) and follow the prompts after sending a message to receive your grant status.
