Turning creativity into a sustainable career is rarely straightforward for writers across Africa. Challenges like payment processing hurdles, limited audience reach, and tools that don’t reflect local realities often make it difficult to grow. Iko Africa was created to remove those barriers.
The platform provides a suite of products that let writers operate as creative entrepreneurs, giving them access to audience insights, community networks, and monetisation pathways tailored to Africa’s unique landscape. Since launching in 2023, Iko Africa has grown to support over 20,000 users. But the platform’s mission goes beyond numbers or social engagement; the real challenge for African writers is not visibility alone, it’s having integrated tools designed for their economic reality.
Iko Africa was founded by Emmanuel Eyo, Shalom Effiom, and Josephine Inika, whose vision laid the foundation for a platform championing African storytelling. The early team, including Emmanuella Ikwen, Albert Nkereuwem, Precious Affiah, Godsgift Emmanuel, Kegbu Mgbe, Nehela Patel, and Ewan Isinugben, helped turn that vision into a thriving ecosystem. Today, the platform offers granular audience data and monetisation options through local payment gateways, ensuring every feature is rooted in the realities of African readership and the creative-led economy.
Looking ahead, Iko Africa plans to introduce more advanced tools that help creators manage portfolios, expand audiences, and scale their work. The goal is to move from being a content destination to the engine room of the African writing industry. As the continent’s tech ecosystem matures, sector-specific infrastructure like Iko Africa is increasingly vital. By focusing on the written word, the platform is empowering writers while strengthening Africa’s cultural and intellectual exports.
“Iko Africa is building for the long haul,” said a platform representative. “We want the next generation of African writers to have the digital scaffolding needed to turn their passion into a viable, scalable profession.”
