Nedbank has appointed former MTN Group Chief Information Officer Nikos Angelopoulos as its new Chief Information Officer (CIO), underscoring a growing trend of banks recruiting telecom executives to accelerate digital transformation and modernise their technology infrastructure.

Angelopoulos will assume the role on September 1 after spending eight years at MTN Group, where he led technology strategy, cloud investments and digital infrastructure across the operator’s 16 markets, serving more than 300 million customers.

His appointment comes at a time when banks are investing heavily in artificial intelligence, cloud computing and cybersecurity, blurring the traditional boundaries between the banking and telecommunications industries.

“Nikos is an internationally experienced technology executive with more than 30 years’ experience across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas,” Nedbank said in a statement announcing the appointment.

The bank said Angelopoulos was responsible for information technology strategy, investments, delivery and governance across MTN’s operations, overseeing one of Africa’s largest and most complex digital networks.

The move reflects a broader shift in how banks are approaching technology leadership.

As financial institutions increasingly operate as digital platforms rather than branch-led businesses, the expertise required to run large-scale telecommunications networks is becoming highly relevant to banking. Both industries now rely on always-on digital services, real-time transactions, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity and data analytics to serve millions of customers.

That convergence is changing hiring priorities.

Rather than relying exclusively on executives with traditional banking backgrounds, lenders are increasingly turning to leaders who have built and managed complex technology ecosystems across telecoms, payments and other digital industries.

Angelopoulos brings more than three decades of global technology experience to the role.

Before joining MTN in 2018, he held senior leadership positions at UAE telecommunications operator du, Vodafone and global consulting firm Accenture, where he led large-scale digital transformation programmes spanning cloud, data and artificial intelligence.

For Nedbank, the appointment signals a bet that experience managing technology at continental scale will be increasingly valuable as banking becomes more digital.

The role of the CIO has also evolved significantly.

Once focused primarily on maintaining IT systems, today’s technology chiefs are expected to shape AI strategy, oversee cloud migration, strengthen cyber resilience, modernise core banking platforms and deliver seamless digital experiences for customers.

That shift is prompting banks to broaden their search for technology talent.

    Nedbank is not alone.

Across Africa, financial institutions have increasingly recruited executives from the telecommunications sector as digital transformation becomes central to competition.

In April 2026, Absa appointed former M-PESA Africa Chief Executive Sitoyo Lopokoiyit to lead its Personal and Private Banking business. Three months later, Stanbic Bank Kenya, part of Standard Bank Group, named former Safaricom executive Michael Mutiga as its Chief Executive Officer.

Some lenders, however, continue to develop technology leadership from within.

Capitec promoted Andrew Baker to Chief Information Officer in February 2026, entrusting him with leading the bank’s technology strategy for its customer base of more than 25 million people.

At Nedbank, Angelopoulos succeeds Ray Naicker, whose departure earlier this year marked the end of more than two decades with the bank. Naicker, who became Group CIO in 2023 after serving as Group Chief Digital Officer, played a key role in advancing the lender’s digital transformation agenda.

The appointment comes as banks increasingly compete not only on financial products, but also on the quality, speed and reliability of their digital services.

For much of the industry’s history, competitive advantage was measured by branch networks and balance sheets. Today, it is increasingly defined by technology platforms, digital infrastructure and the people capable of building them.

Nedbank’s latest hire reflects that reality and signals that the future of banking may depend as much on technology expertise as it does on financial experience.
