Vitel Wireless has deepened its presence in Nigeria’s telecom market with the launch of a non-expiring data service, designed to address long-standing consumer frustrations around data loss and pricing fairness.
The new offering, dubbed “Data Wey No Dey Expire”, allows subscribers to retain purchased data until fully consumed, eliminating the time restrictions that typically apply to internet bundles in the country.
Speaking at the launch in Lagos, Vitel Wireless Chairman and CEO, Engr. Kenneth Emeka Nwabueze, said the initiative aims to give Nigerians greater flexibility and value amid ongoing economic pressures.
“Once users pay for data, they should be able to use it at their convenience, without worrying about losing unused balances,” Nwabueze said. He criticised conventional data bundles as confusing and restrictive, pointing out that smaller daily bundles are often priced transparently, while larger packages are designed in ways that disadvantage consumers.
The need for non-expiring data, Nwabueze explained, is especially acute in Nigeria, where inconsistent electricity, unexpected personal constraints, or financial pressures can prevent people from consuming their internet allocation on time.
Highlighting the company’s network reach, Nwabueze noted that Vitel Wireless is leveraging MTN’s cell towers, giving it extensive coverage across Nigeria without the cost of building its own infrastructure.
To support adoption, Vitel Wireless is distributing free eSIMs, allowing users to test the service alongside existing lines without switching networks. The company also plans to roll out specialised platform-based bundles for WhatsApp, YouTube, and Netflix, all operating without expiry limits.
Looking ahead, Vitel Wireless intends to introduce device-related offerings, including the proposed “X Phone”, aimed at reducing connectivity costs. The company also showcased its location awareness technology, enabling users to access location details in emergencies.
Operating as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, Vitel focuses on research, innovation, and cost reduction rather than building physical infrastructure. Nwabueze emphasised that regulatory approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission was critical in bringing the non-expiring data model to market.
“Our focus is on delivering solutions that reflect the realities of Nigerian consumers. Innovation and measurable value will continue to guide everything we do,” he said.
