Just days after buying Ethiopian-founded developer tools startup Better Auth, US cloud platform Vercel has returned to Africa for another acquisition, this time snapping up Egyptian AI infrastructure startup Stakpak in a move that underscores its growing focus on AI-native developer tools.
Although the companies did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction, the deal will see Stakpak’s founders join Vercel to continue building AI-powered infrastructure products. Its open-source projects, which have gained traction among developers, will remain publicly available.
Founded in 2023 by George Fahmy, Stakpak set out to remove much of the complexity involved in deploying and managing software infrastructure. Its products, including an autonomous open-source DevOps agent and AI-powered security tools, automate routine infrastructure tasks that traditionally require significant engineering effort.
For Fahmy, the acquisition is about more than joining another cloud platform. He said Vercel is working towards what he calls “agentic infrastructure” a future where developers spend their time building AI applications while intelligent systems handle much of the operational work behind the scenes.
Stakpak’s journey has been relatively swift. The company launched as a bootstrapped startup in Cairo before relocating its headquarters to San Francisco after attracting investor backing. Earlier this year, it raised US$500,000 in a funding round led by P1 Ventures, with participation from Digital Currency Group, 500 Global, and Instabug co-founders Moataz Soliman and Omar Gabr.
Despite establishing a US base, the startup continued to build its products from Egypt, keeping its engineering team in the country while expanding its global footprint. The approach has become increasingly common among African startups seeking international customers without moving their technical talent overseas.
Vercel’s latest acquisition adds to a growing list of African AI startups finding exits through global technology companies. Meta’s acquisition of Cairo-founded voice AI startup PlayAI earlier this year pointed to rising international demand for African AI expertise. With the purchases of Better Auth and now Stakpak, Vercel appears to be making a deliberate bet on the continent’s growing pool of developer infrastructure talent rather than isolated startup opportunities.
The deal also comes as Egypt pushes to position itself as a regional AI hub through its National AI Strategy 2025–2030, which aims to expand the country’s AI ecosystem and encourage the growth of more homegrown AI companies.
Beyond the acquisition itself, the transaction reflects a broader shift in Africa’s technology ecosystem. Increasingly, startups are building globally competitive products from the continent, attracting international capital and becoming strategic acquisition targets while continuing to employ engineering talent at home. The challenge for African markets will be ensuring that these high-profile exits help strengthen local innovation ecosystems rather than simply exporting talent to global technology companies.
