As demand for artificial intelligence (AI) skills outpaces supply, Vodacom is looking beyond traditional hiring channels and turning to South Africa’s universities to develop the next generation of AI talent.
The telecoms giant has partnered with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch the Vodacom AI Lab, an initiative that will give postgraduate students hands-on experience by working on real-world AI projects drawn from the telecommunications industry.
The programme reflects a growing view that Africa’s AI ambitions depend not only on access to technology but also on developing the skilled workforce needed to build and deploy it. Instead of limiting learning to the classroom, students will work alongside researchers and industry professionals on commercial applications ranging from network optimisation and customer service to data analytics and decision-making.
Vodacom, the initiative is also a strategic investment in its future workforce. As telecom operators increasingly deploy AI across network operations, fraud detection, predictive maintenance and customer support, demand for engineers, data scientists and machine learning specialists continues to outstrip supply across South Africa and the wider continent.
“The future of AI in Africa depends on developing local talent that understands the continent’s unique challenges,” said Vodacom Group Chief Executive Officer Shameel Joosub during the launch. He described the AI Lab as a platform for responsible innovation with practical, real-world impact.
AWS will provide the cloud infrastructure and AI tools that power the programme.
“This partnership is designed to create the next generation of AI talent for South Africa, and by extension, for Africa, by giving postgraduate students access to the same AI tools used by enterprises,” said Prabashni Naidoo, AWS South Africa Director.
Beyond technical training, the partnership aims to narrow the gap between higher education and industry by exposing students to commercial AI projects before they graduate.
“We can change that by putting real-life problems to the universities and develop the necessary muscle that we need,” Joosub said.
The initiative builds on broader efforts to strengthen AI capabilities across South Africa. In March 2025, Google partnered with the country’s Department of Higher Education and Training to provide 5,000 scholarships in AI, cybersecurity and data analytics across selected public universities and colleges.
Unlike scholarship programmes focused on classroom learning, Vodacom’s approach places postgraduate students directly on live business projects, allowing them to gain practical experience while contributing to commercial AI solutions.
Joosub said the company ultimately hopes to recruit more AI specialists directly from universities, creating a stronger pipeline of homegrown talent.
“We are building a model for collaboration that connects education with industry, research with real applications, and innovation with opportunity,” he said.
Naidoo said students would gain experience using enterprise-grade AI infrastructure rather than simply studying the technology in theory.
“Students will not study AI in theory. They will work on live Vodacom cases running on AWS infrastructure,” she said. “This is the bridge between learning and doing.”
The University of Johannesburg believes the partnership will help close the gap between academic research and commercial deployment.
“This collaboration reinforces the bridge between theory and application,” said Professor Tankiso Moloi, Executive Dean of UJ’s College of Business and Economics. “This is how we close the gap between qualification and application, between research and implementation, and between academia and transformative careers.”
The partners say they hope the initiative will eventually extend beyond the University of Johannesburg. Joosub described the programme as “a blueprint for AI capability development across Africa”, while Naidoo said the model could be replicated through similar university-industry partnerships across the continent.
